I’ve put “Simple Tagging 1.6.2″ on the blog now–yes Wordpress has categories included, which are very useful, but this plug-in adds a separate tag functionality (and then mashes them all back together for the feed at the end of the day). Though I can’t say I find the plug-in very simple, it looks like it has an impressive range of options and so this blog will probably be labeled with some mix of categories and tags. [When I threw together my own personal blog software with Perl back in 2002, I labeled posts with a pseudo-XML “<topic1> </topic1>” tag. So maybe I should rebuild something like that in PHP and have three ways to classify posts. Or four–maybe each post should be judged to be up or down like so many quarks are.]
I’ve put in the tags list at the end of posts for now, and a lot more can be done with them like tag clouds and tag lists, especially after a handful of posts when the tags start to represent a large sample.

I say this because PhotoBucket, who just got eaten…errr…bought by NewsCorp., has about 80 people on staff who tag the uploaded photos. Interesting, no? Some might tag a photo: fun, crazzzzzzzy, love when it’s actually a photo of a cat, and the don’t include the tag cat. Know what I mean?

I find that very interesting, that you see tags being assigned very subjectively. I’ve thought of tags as an attempt to make writing subject to a more technical analysis, the kind computers are good at–the shortness and repetition of the tags allow search engines to use statistics like frequency of usage and watch for trends across time and people.
But of course, if the tags are assigned arbitrarily or subjectively or inaccurately it’s hard to expect much from the algorithms processing the tags.

Do you think tags are too subjective?
